KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed optimism that foreign direct investments (FDI) from Japan will surpass RM30 billion (US$6.33 billion) in 2023, highlighting the unwavering confidence of Japanese investors in Malaysia. The announcement follows information from Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz about anticipated new investments from Japan this year.
During a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Anwar lauded the impressive commitment of Japanese companies already investing in Malaysia, all of whom have pledged to increase and expand their presence in the country.
Prime Minister Kishida is in Malaysia for a two-day working visit. Anwar also highlighted the shared commitment of both Malaysia and Japan as members of the Asia Zero Emissions Community. Both nations are dedicated to intensifying efforts for decarbonization and achieving ambitious goals for zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Anwar mentioned the potential for enhanced collaboration with Japan in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, where Malaysia has a longstanding history of exporting LNG through Petronas. In 2022, LNG constituted a significant portion of Malaysia's exports to Japan, accounting for 31 per cent of the total exports to the country. The Prime Minister underscored the shared enthusiasm between the two nations for further cooperation in this vital sector.
